As a designer, blogger and all-around creative, I read about and study lots of interior designers.  One of the designers that has recently stood out to me is Katie Ridder.  Although Katie has designed since 1995, after a stint at House & Garden and House Beautiful magazine, her work has made an impression on me because of her use of color.
In today’s design world so many designers are creating rooms that are “quite” and “soft” often using totally neutral color palettes.  While these low-key rooms are on trend and have their place, it’s refreshing to see a designer like Katie designing rooms that are just as stylish, just as on-trend, just a sophisticated yet full of color.  Color is obviously a signature design element for Katie and she does it well.  Take a look as some of Katie’s work…

I love that Katie has used the same color on the wall and chair fabric resulting in a room that feels very cozy and relaxed.

A colorful sofa is something you will find in lots of Katie Ridder designed spaces.  The sofa is always the attention grabber but plays beautifully with the other textiles in the space.

I love this combination of yellow and teal which makes the room feel pretty without being too cute.

Oh how I love this orange sofa against the creamy walls and flooring.

This is one of my favorite Katie Ridder rooms.  I love the Americana feel with a touch of eclectic glam and whimsy.

Americana with a traditional spin. The pops of red really give this room energy.

A great example of saturated colors mixed with pastels.
I recently added Katie Ridder’s book to my design library and have been inspired by so many of the spaces she has designed.

I’ve been on the search for some fresh inspiration and keep coming back to the work of the California design team at Hillary Thomas Designs.  What I love most about the spaces they create is how effortless, comfortable and personal each one is.
This quote from Hillary sums up her design approach perfectly…
Our “stuff” tells a story about what inspires us, what we value, how we look at life, where we’ve been, where we’re going… it’s our humble little stamp on the world.
Whether it’s a detail, the layout, the color, the furniture or the overall feel of the space, I know you’ll find Hillary’s work just as inspiring as I did.
Enjoy!

the colors, the texture, the mixing of styles
 the pattern mixing
the bold detail
 the simple elegance {and that rug}

While I’ve spent a little time recouping from my surgery, I’ve had a chance to watch all the shows I had recorded on my DVR.  Amongst the long list of Oprah shows, Dance Moms (guilty pleasure) and Housewives of NYC were all the episodes of Sarah’s House with none other than on of my design idols Sarah Richardson.  I don’t know if you had a chance to watch but this series was noting short of fabulous.  Sarah and her charming side kick Tommy design the most stunning and livable rooms ever.  I love Sarah’s esthetic, her use of color and how she

Here are my favorite looks from this season of Sarah’s House.

Love the industrial mix that makes up this vignette.

The softness of this room gives off such a relaxing feel.  Although it’s a tad on the formal side it looks very approachable.

Stunning grey and white kitchen.  I’m loving the look of multiple paint finishes on kitchen cabinets.

Great pattern mixing! And that coffee table looks like a fun DIY project.

This cute little work space has lots of character!

A beautiful entrance!

The black cabinet really helps to add depth to this space and the artwork collage helps the TV to blend in.

The white wall ( created with moulding and paint) is a brilliant way to create a focal point and frame out the bed/headboard.

Love this furniture turned vanity and the unexpected style sink.

I adore, adore, ADORE this wallpaper!  A powder room is the perfect place for this intricate and whimsical pattern.

A front view of the entry.  I really like that Sarah used different element on each side of the chest to make the space less predictable.

The perfect fabric for these chairs.

This kitchen and eating area is just amazing. And check out the stained table base with the painted wood top and painted chairs.  So fresh!

Every kitchen need a mini frig/wine cooler.  Love the tiered layout of the island, making each work are distinct.

 Pretty and quaint!

This is an awesome craft space!  Love the paint treatment on the ceiling and all the organizational elements from IKEA!

My next sofa purchase will be grey!  I so love this color palette!

A great example of mixing finishes!

Who wouldn’t love this bathroom.  Those hexagon mirrors are to-die-for!

Happy Monday!

I thought I start the week off sharing a few images from a designer I admire a great deal.

Eileen Kathryn Boyd is known for her use of color and her skill at creating rooms with a distinct color footprint. Taking inspiration from the fashion runways and adapting the color inspiration into the personal spaces within a home is what makes Eileen’s work stand out.

I know these beautiful and colorful spaces will put a little “happy” into the start of your week.

 Enjoy!

One of the most amazing wall treatments I’ve seen!

Color is one of the most important elements in the design of a room and where and how color is used can make or break the look.

This gorgeous foyer designed by William Diamond and David Baratta, two of my design idols, is the perfect example of using color in just the right places to make an impact,  coming and going.

The painted doors are to die for!  It’s not unusual to see the outside of a front door painted, but painting the inside is so dramatic and will definitely leave a lasting impression.

The rug pattern is bold enough to grab your attention, but doesn’t overwhelm.

I love the idea of using a pair of chairs in the same style but different colors to add a bit of playfulness.

The green carpet stair runner is an unexpected pop of color.

This space just oozes style and beauty and the use of color is the foundation!

I recently came across the design work of Kishani Perera and was instantly taken by the eclectic and vibrant mix of furniture, textiles and accessories that have become a signature for her room designs.  And, I also love her personal style!

Kishani has a love for antiques and many of her spaces incorporate old and new pieces sitting together in harmony.

room: Kitchen, Traditional room by kishani perera inc.

She has a knack for creating elegant and stylish spaces with a true sense of personality.  I love the traditional botanical art display offset by the fun and whimsical polka-dot fabric on the stools.

room: Living Room, Eclectic room by kishani perera inc.

This space is another great example of pieces from different eras mixed together to create a comfortable and personal space.

room: Living Room, Contemporary room by kishani perera inc.

This space is so beautiful with simple and sleek furniture used in a room full of traditional details.  Love the neutral backdrop and bold pops of color.

In looking through her portfolio I noticed that many of the rooms designed by Kashani showcase an unexpected element or two.

What a fun fabric to use on the sofa!

An eclectic mix of textiles and details.

Love this office space–bold colors against white furnishings.

This living room setting is one of my all time favorites.  I love the oversized saying art and the texture and detail within the sofa, chairs and table.  Such a subtle space that says so much.

I’m so glad I stumbled across Kishani’s work.  She has quickly become one of my design inspirations!

It all began when a  blog reader sent me an email about this photo, which I wrote about here, asking about the source of the table.  A little research lead me to the designer, which parlayed me into a MAJOR DESIGN CRUSH with Greg Natale.

Greg Natale

This Sydney, Australian designer creates some of the most beautiful spaces I’ve seen. Mr. Natale’s design esthetic leans towards traditional, but his approach to details and finishes, along with his selection of accessories give his spaces a truly fresh and modern feel.

I’ll let the images of his Twomey Country House project speak for his design talent.  Soak it all in!

Love the iron door at the entrance.

The grey walls are subtle yet dramatic.

 What a view…inside and out!

The the modern hit of green that shows up in the breakfast area/family room.

A few unexpected pops of color.

Attention to detail always makes a room stand out!

Love these floors!

A charming crystal chandelier sits adjacent to a more casual light fixture so easily.

So much visual interest in this space.

Is this not one of the most beautiful pieces of design work you’ve ever seen?

So elegant and classic.

A cozy and beautiful spot to relax.  The black walls are stunning and I love the carpet and pillows.

Simple white curtains with a black trim.

Having just completed the makeover of my black, white and yellow bedroom, you know I love this space.  The yellow fabric inserts on the bed are incredible.

Look at the detail work in the carpeting.

These walls are gorgeous.

Love the yellow sofa.

Oh what a dream.

Everything in this bathroom is stunning!  Check out those faucets.

And, it only gets better…a black and white bedroom with my favorite color as a accents.  Lovely!

These images only showcase a small part of Greg Natale’s work.  Head here to check out his full portfolio and learn more about this incredibly talented designer.

Yet another reason to love Australia!

Anyone special you have a design crush on?
