Most likely if you’ve read blogs and design magazines over the last year or so you’ve seen the term Rough Luxe used to describe a new design style that has emerged!
Rough Luxe in simple terms is the blending of old and new, rustic with polished, history with present day and well-worn with pristine. It’s a new way of achieving a beautifully design room that has both style and character!
While lots of discussion has taken place in the design world about this new style, I for one am in love with the result that Rough Luxe rooms achieve. Theres’s nothing more personal than a home that is filled with treasures and elements of the past sitting right next to items that are current and on-trend at the moment.
Here’s a peek at a few Rough Luxe spaces with a blend of old and new!
The exposed reclaim beams and trim give this home its heritage while the newer furnishings make it comfortable for todays living. This home does not read OLD to me but rather charming and comfortable.
A Rough Luxe statement can be achieved with minimal elements of old. The rustic planks of this desk are given a touch of luxe with a white wash finish. The silver lamp and modern accessories add a little luxe to the mix.
The combination of elements is key. A sleek white tub and luxe accessories are surrounded by rough elements like the rustic shelf and iron accents.
Check out the desk in this image…a well-worn piece from the past that sits beautifully with more luxe and glamorous elements to give this space its unique personality.

Here’s a brief description of the contents from Amazon:
“The worn, vintage and unfinished look of ‘rough luxe’ is more than just the masculine side of shabby chic. It creates the kind of authenticity that is unscripted history in physical form. It reinvents the past by redefining luxury today. Here design rejects minimalism and extravagance and celebrates imperfection. It is the embodiment of real at a time when the unexpected and the surprising is valued higher than pristine and probable. Design elements are washed and worn with history, reminding us of bygone times with an industrial look into the future. Fabrics are distressed over immaculate furnishings, painted walls are faded like expressionist fine art, and perfectly torn wallpaper shows the multiple years of its story. ROUGH LUXE DESIGN features the most exclusive list of interior designers, furniture purveyors, industrial designers, and trend-setting entrepreneurs responsible for bringing “rough luxury” into the cultural consciousness. This beautifully illustrated book showcases the best examples of how the masterful staging of raw imperfection can fulfill the desire for a luxury design.”
When it comes to design, nothing is more beautiful than a room that blends the old with the new without losing any of its style, sophistication or luxury. In my opinion, Rough Luxe is here to stay!
