Remember when I told you last Friday that I’d be sharing my first DIY projects of the year with you AND do you recall that saying that ‘things always take longer than expected’?  Well, my projects fell victim to the time it takes for paint to dry in a super cold garage.  But alas, the paint is dry and it’s time to share my first project with you.

Last year (in early spring) I purchased this metal cart for $8.00 at a one of my favorite flea markets.

My plans were to paint it and turn it into a chic little bar cart.  Things started out great and I got the cart primed and ready for painting in late May and then life, work and daily obligations got in the way.  The bar cart sat for months (7 to be exact) until just a few days ago when I decided it was time!

So here is my finished bar cart, all dressed up and ready to party!

I decided to paint the cart gold using two different gold finished.  The base is Krylon Metallic Gold Spray Paint,

Krylon Metallic Paint Bright Gold

and to add a little style to the top of the cart I added a striped pattern using  Rustoleum Brilliant Gold Metallic spray paint in a shiner gold finish.

ScotchBlue Painters Tape with Edge Lock allowed me to achieve crisp clean edges for my stripes and made the job easy!  I love the how my bar cart turned out!

I still want to add glass handles on each side of the cart to make it easier to move around but haven’t found the right ones yet.  Until I do, I’m going to celebrate my first DIY Project of 2013 with a cocktail!  Who wants to join me?

I’ll be back tomorrow with the second project I completed.  I think you’re going to love it!

Whenever I’m designing a space, my goal is always to enhance or create a focal point within the room.  Often times that is done by making one wall stand out from the rest. There are lots of ways to make an impact in design but when it come to making a statement on a wall, these are the best ways to make an impact!

1.  WITH WOOD

If a rustic look is your thing, using reclaimed wood to create a statement wall is ideal.

I love the texture and visual movement this plank wall brings to the space.

Painted planks add a rustic and charming feel.  Mix in a few antiques and your room comes to life.

This look is for the true artist and someone with a lot of patience!

2.  WITH PAINT

The cheapest and easiest way to create a focal wall in your home is with paint.  Pull the color from a dominant pattern within the room to connect the dots.

Bold walls make a dramatic impact.

In a smaller space, stripes can work wonders to make the space feel larger.

I love this chevron pattern which add instant style!

3.  WITH STENCILS OR DECALS

For a more artistic approach, stencils or wall decals will do the trick.  With more intricate patterns you can just accent one wall or be bold and paint the entire space.

This accent wall draws you into the space and serves as a perfect backdrop to the table vignette.

A stenciled wall is the perfect accent for a foyer!

I love how this long foyer was given some visual interest with a wall stencil.  The pattern adds interest without overwhelming.

Even a simple statement like this wall decal can have big impact and save you lots of money.

4.  WITH CURTAINS

One of the best ways to soften a large space or one with lots of angles and wall is with curtain panels.  Use them to frame a piece of furniture or hide a vast expanse of windows.

The curtains behind this bed give the sleeping area more impact and actually make this super large bedroom feel more quaint.

A full wall of curtains is a great way to add visual interest and color.

I love the soft sheer drapes scalloped along this large wall.  Not only do they add softness but they fill this large wall which would be hard to do with art or other wall decor.

5.  WITH BOOKSHELVES

There is nothing more that I love than a wall of bookcases.  I love the personality they add to a space in addition to the organization and structure they bring to a room.

These leaning bookshelves are fab.

Such a great way to create an informal library or office feel in your home.  And of course adding an accent color to the back makes the shelves pop!

Another great bookcase wall using the Billy Bookcases from Ikea.

6.  WITH WALLPAPER

Once a staple in the design industry, wallpaper is making a come back.  Whether you use it in a small area or to decorate an entire room, wall paper is ideal when design, color, impact and style are needed!

Wallpaper added above a chair rail adds just the right amount of impact!

In a rental space, wallpaper panels (applied to foam core or sheets of plywood) are the perfect solution to adding impact to your walls.

Framed wallpaper makes a great headboard alternative!

There are so many great ways to create an impact wall within your home.  The hard part is deciding which of these ideas is right for you!

I love designing spaces when patterns are involved but, patternwork can be a very personal thing.

Some people like florals while others like geometrics.  And, some people like traditional patterns while some like more contempoary versions.  However, when it comes to classic and timeless design style, there are FIVE PATTERNS that every home decor can benefit from. regardless of your design style.

  1. STRIPES–one of the most classic patterns of all which can be interpreted in so many color combinations and widths.
  2. PLAID–a more traditional pattern which lends a classic feel to decor.  Smaller plaids take on a  more casual, country feel and larger plaids can feel a bit more modern.
  3. POLKA DOT–dots are a playful and whimsical addition to decor.
  4. HOUNDSTOOTH–another classic pattern that lends itself to more traditional decor when done in black and white, and more contemporary decor when color is used.
  5. CHEVRON–chevron patterns are perfect for all styles of decor.  Depending on the width of the lines, chevron can feel classic or modern.

Here are a few inspirational images using the FIVE key patterns.

Be inspired by their application, placement and color variety.

Stripes Make Me Happy!

Have you noticed that stripes are everywhere?

From  Spring fashions….

these knit wrapped trees in Houston, Texas.  Aren’t these just incredible!  Check out the mission behind this trees, here.

And of course, stripes are one of the most stylish ways to add punch to your decor.  Here are a few of my favorite stripe infused spaces.

I love the mix of different stripe widths in this room.  So modern and fresh!

These chair covers are adorable.

The combination of vertical and horizontal stripes give this area lots of visual interest.  A great technique for a large accent wall!

I wonder what’s behind the  pink door?

This chair looks like it would be great for a springtime nap!

Cheerful accessories bring so much life to a room.

Classic!

If you need to infuse a bit of energy into your home, consider stripes!

Cheers!
